“The Black Pirates of Omean”

In "The Black Pirates of Omean," John Carter returns to Mars after a decade away, only to find himself in the Valley Dor—the final resting place of every Martian. With the help of an old friend, Tars Tarkas, and a daring rescue of the enslaved Thuvia, he uncovers a growing threat: the Black Pirates of Omean, who have taken Dejah Thoris captive. Written by Philip Evans and Edgar Rice Burroughs, with art by Jesse Marsh, this 1952 adventure from Four Color #437 delivers a gripping blend of Martian mystery and perilous escape, all rendered in the bold style of Marsh’s pencils and inks. The cover, also by Marsh, captures the tension of the moment with striking detail.

After ten years away from Mars, John Carter is finally able to return and finds himself in the Valley Dor, where every Martian comes at the end of life. When savage plant men attack three Tharks John is able to save one, who coincidently is an old friend, Tars Tarkas. John and Tars escape the plant men through a passage that leads them into the city of the Therns. There they rescue a slave girl, Thuvia, and learn the Therns are being raided by the Black Pirates of Omean, who have captured Dejah Thoris, John's wife on Barsoom.
