“Christmas in the Circus”

"Christmas in the Circus" is a heartwarming 1951 tale from Four Color #361, where Santa—though kind and devoted—lacks the craft to make toys. When bandits steal his clothes and scatter his cargo on a snowy journey, he battles the cold and despair, only to be transformed by an angel’s gift of skill, a red suit, and a flying sleigh. Dan Noonan handles both art and inks for the story, while Dan Gormley’s cover captures the magic with festive flair.

Santa works in a village of toymakers high in the mountains. He loves children, but doesn't have the skill to make toys. At Christmas time, he is chosen to take the load of toys to the city for the children. On the way, he is jumped by bandits, who take his clothes and dump his sleigh and scatter the toys. He struggles to gather and repair the toys despite freezing weather. An angel, impressed by his dedication, appears and gives him the skills of toy-making, his red suit, and the sleigh with flying reindeer. She declares he will bring joy to all children forever.
