Detective Comics #45
From November 1940, this issue of Detective Comics presents a cover by Bob Kane (with inks by Jerry Robinson and George Roussos) that crackles with urgency: Batman leaps cape-billowing through a pink-tinged night sky, swooping down on a wide-eyed villain in a green suit, while Robin stands bound in rope beside a blazing fire in the background. The dynamic composition — Batman mid-dive, the captured Robin, a darkened building on the horizon — sets a genuinely tense scene for "The Case of the Laughing Death!" Bill Finger's scripting talent paired with Kane's kinetic artwork makes this a memorable snapshot of the Dynamic Duo at their early Golden Age best.
