“The Hermit of Mystery Island”

From 1959, Detective Comics #274 brings Batman and Robin face-to-face with a wild-eyed, robed hermit on Mystery Island, who looms over the Dynamic Duo clutching what appear to be arrows or stakes while threatening to unleash "the Curse of the Five Fates." Sheldon Moldoff's pencils and Charles Paris's inks give the scene a wonderfully eerie atmosphere, with a glowing sun and jagged rocky outcroppings framing the confrontation against a moody purple sky. It's a quintessential Silver Age DC setup — strange islands, ancient curses, and Batman and Robin caught squarely in the middle of it all.
