About this Collection

This volume collects the seminal early Batman stories from the 1980s, including Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's 'Batman: Year One,' which redefined Bruce Wayne's first year as Gotham's protector and introduced key characters like Lieutenant James Gordon and Selina Kyle. It also includes 'Batman: Year Two' and other tales from that era, featuring the first appearances of the Reaper and a young Jason Todd as Robin, alongside classic rogues like the Joker and Scarecrow. A cornerstone collection for fans of Batman's formative years in the modern age.

"A Bird in the Hand..." delivers a gripping, emotionally charged chapter in Batman’s early legend, written by Mike W. Barr and brought to life with bold, dynamic art by Todd McFarlane. As Bruce’s proposal to Rachel unfolds amid a mob gathering, the Reaper’s violent intrusion forces Batman into a brutal confrontation that unravels long-buried secrets and leads to a shocking, irreversible moment. The cover, a striking collaboration by David Mazzucchelli, captures the story’s intense atmosphere, while Adrienne Roy’s colors and Todd Klein’s lettering heighten the tension.

While Bruce proposes to Rachel, the Reaper attacks the gathered mob bosses. Batman arrives late to the fight, and the Reaper escapes again, while Joe Chill is knocked unconscious. When Chill comes to, Batman takes the thug to the alley where he killed the Waynes and reveals their connection. But before Batman can complete his revenge, the Reaper kills Joe Chill. Batman and the Reaper fight one final time and the Reaper falls to his death. Later, Batman disposes of Joe Chill's gun in the base of the Wayne Foundation Building and Rachel enters the convent to atone for the sins of her father.
