Who is Margaret Pye?

Margaret Pye is Magpie, a compulsive thief who steals priceless jewels and replaces them with lethal booby-trapped fakes. Debuting in the post-Crisis DC universe, she was notably one of the first villains Batman and Superman confronted together, her obsession with glittering objects making her a distinctive early entry in Batman's rogues gallery.

A creature of the Copper Age's grittier DC landscape, Margaret Pye made her mark in John Byrne's landmark The Man of Steel #3 in 1986 — part of the bold reimagining of Superman's mythology that defined that era. Over nearly four decades she has surfaced across the pages of Batman, Adventures of Superman, and Action Comics, keeping rarefied company alongside the likes of Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern. Her appearances may be select rather than sprawling, but there's something fitting about a character who has lingered in DC's world since the Copper Age, a persistent, intriguing presence in the shadows of its most iconic titles.
