About this Issue

DC Comics Presents #47 marks the first appearance of He-Man, Skeletor, Man-at-Arms, Teela, Battle Cat (Cringer), Beastman, the Goddess, and Zoar in a standard-format comic book — prior to this issue, the Masters of the Universe characters existed only in the minicomics packaged with Mattel action figures. Crucially, this issue also introduced the Prince Adam secret-identity concept for the first time anywhere; the earlier Mattel minicomics had depicted He-Man as a hero without a dual identity. By routing the story through DC's flagship team-up anthology and pairing the brand-new toy-line cast against Superman himself, DC and Mattel gave the Masters of the Universe their broadest audience yet, paving the way for the three-issue 1982–83 DC limited series and, indirectly, influencing the character bible that shaped the iconic Filmation animated series. The issue's backup story, 'Whatever Happened to Sandy the Golden Boy?', reunited the Golden Age Sandman (Wesley Dodds) with his long-transformed sidekick Sandy Hawkins for the first time since Justice League of America #113 (1974), restoring Sandy to human form and setting the character on a path toward his eventual JSA hero identity.

In "From Eternia — with Death!", Skeletor's desperate bid to breach Castle Grayskull unleashes a dimensional storm that pulls Superman from Earth to the planet Eternia. With the fate of both worlds hanging in the balance, the Man of Steel joins forces with He-Man in a clash of titans against the dark lord. Written by Paul Kupperberg and brought to life by Curt Swan’s dynamic art, Mike DeCarlo’s inks, Gene D’Angelo’s colors, and Ben Oda’s lettering, this 1982 crossover delivers a thrilling, high-stakes encounter. The cover by Ross Andru and Frank Giacoia captures the epic scale of the battle.

History

The story came about through DC's licensing arrangement with Mattel, which also gave DC the assignment of producing the second wave of Masters of the Universe action-figure minicomics. Writer Paul Kupperberg and penciller Curt Swan — already the definitive Superman art team of the era — handled the lead feature, while Julius Schwartz served as editor and E. Nelson Bridwell as consulting editor, with the Grand Comics Database confirming credits from Schwartz's own editorial records. The book was on sale by mid-March 1982 with a July cover date, meaning it reached newsstands roughly a month before the first wave of Mattel toys hit shelves, making it the earliest public introduction of the Masters characters in any comic format. The backup feature continued Mike W. Barr and José Delbo's recurring 'Whatever Happened to...?' series, which had run in DC Comics Presents since issue #25 and was approaching its final installment.
