The cover by Gil Kane and Frank Giacoia says it all: Superman is wrapped tight in the crushing tentacles of a massive octopus while a visibly alarmed Aquaman — the one hero you'd expect to have sway over sea creatures — reaches out helplessly, unable to command the beast to release its grip. The cover copy cheekily asks whether this is really your everyday, run-of-the-mill octopus, and the answer is clearly no. Rounding out the package is a bonus feature teasing "Whatever Happened to the Black Pirate?", making this August 1982 issue a generous double dose of DC adventure.
