On a diplomatic mission for his father, Prince Conn and his party are ambushed. Unable to find any trace of his son, King Conan assumes that Conn is dead until he receives a spiritual omen directing him to find answers in the salt marshes. Before he can begin his search, King Conan is poisoned by one of his servants and is confined to a fortnight in bed. From his sickbed, King Conan directs Publius to send the King's Black Dragons out to seek the answers in the salt marshes.
