In "Am Galgenbaum," Prince Conn faces execution in Numalia for a murder he didn’t commit, only to vanish mid-hanging and reappear in the forest before the enigmatic Mad Zandra. As he flees to confront his father, Conn is intercepted by his brother Taurus, who sees him as a threat to the throne and allies with Zandra to spirit him away. There, he builds a life with Li-Tan, the Khitai maiden he once rescued, though shadows of betrayal and forgotten secrets linger in his mind. As war approaches and the village is forced to flee, Conn confronts visions of his mother and father, leading him to choose a path of resistance among the fleeing warriors.
