Beast Boy #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeBeast Boy #1 (January 2000) marks the formal in-continuity restoration of Garfield Logan's original codename — he had operated as 'Changeling' since 1980's New Teen Titans, and this miniseries is the story in which he reclaims the 'Beast Boy' identity he abandoned as a teenager. The issue also introduces Gemini De Mille, daughter of Doom Patrol villain Madame Rouge, a shape-shifting antagonist who would go on to join the Brotherhood of Evil and reappear across multiple DC titles through the 2000s. As one of Geoff Johns's earliest DC solo credits, the series established the character-focused, continuity-literate voice Johns would later bring to Teen Titans vol. 3 (2003), making it a quiet but meaningful early chapter in his transformation of the Titans franchise.
In "Nobody's Hero," Beast Boy trades superheroics for Hollywood dreams, moving in with his laid-back cousin Matt and trying to revive his acting career. When a fan from his past TV role stirs up trouble at a bar, Beast Boy steps in to help—only to find himself tangled in a mystery when a man is found dead and the girl vanishes, leaving Gar face-to-face with the police. Written by Geoff Johns and Ben Raab, with art by Justiniano and colors by Jason Wright, this issue captures Beast Boy at a crossroads, where fame, identity, and justice blur. The cover, also by Justiniano, captures the moment of tension with sharp, expressive detail.

The miniseries was co-written by Geoff Johns — then best known for Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. — and Ben Raab, with pencils by Justiniano, inks by Chris Ivy, and editing by Eddie Berganza. It was positioned by DC as a spin-off of the concurrent Titans ongoing series, though the narrative premise actually grew out of Beast Boy having been rejected from that team's roster, sending Gar to Hollywood to restart his acting career instead. The series ran January through April 2000, and all four issues were later collected in the trade paperback Teen Titans: Beast Boys and Girls alongside the 'Wild Kingdom' arc from Johns's Teen Titans vol. 3, with a new introduction by Johns.
