Avengers #5

The cover of this June 1998 issue says it all: a bold speech bubble proclaims "You're NOT Earth's Mightiest Heroes — WE ARE!" as the Squadron Supreme advances in force, led by a red-and-gold-costumed figure striding forward with fists raised, flanked by teammates including a winged woman, a black-suited figure crackling with energy, and several others pressing through crumbling walls. George Pérez's cover art packs the frame with confrontational energy, setting up what "Accusation Most Foul" promises to be a charged clash between two teams each claiming the right to that heroic title. Kurt Busiek and Pérez were firing on all cylinders in this era, and this issue looks like a prime example of why their Avengers run earned its reputation.
