About this Issue

Astonishing X-Men #1 (July 2004) launched Marvel's third volume of the title as the flagship X-Men book of the mid-2000s, deliberately positioning itself as an accessible entry point that honored both Chris Claremont's foundational era and Grant Morrison's immediately preceding New X-Men run, while charting its own distinct course. Writer Joss Whedon and artist John Cassaday introduced the mutant-cure concept — seeded here by the debut villains Ord of the Breakworld and Dr. Kavita Rao — a storyline thread that proved enormously influential on later X-Men comics and adaptations. The issue also marked the return of Kitty Pryde as a central X-Man after years away from the team, beginning a character arc that Whedon has described as the emotional backbone of his entire run. The Whedon–Cassaday run that this issue opens would go on to win the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series in 2006, cementing its place as one of the most critically recognized X-Men runs of its generation.

History

The series grew out of a conversation between Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada and Joss Whedon — already famous for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly — at a comic convention, where Quesada pitched Whedon the X-Men with John Cassaday attached as artist. Whedon had originally been in discussions to take over Grant Morrison's New X-Men title directly, but Marvel instead gave him a relaunched series of his own with wide creative latitude, including the freedom to remain isolated from Marvel's large line-wide crossover events. The book launched in May 2004 (cover-dated July 2004) as part of the publishing initiative known as X-Men: Reload, which reorganized the entire X-line following Morrison's departure and the cancellation of several satellite titles. Cassaday, coming off an acclaimed run on Captain America, and colorist Laura Martin completed the core creative team alongside letterer Chris Eliopoulos and editor Mike Marts.
