“The Monster Freak”

In "The Monster Freak," Valerie takes Archie and the gang on a thoughtful detour from their usual antics, using a playful thought experiment to unpack the real meaning of women's liberation. With Stan Goldberg's expressive art and Dan DeCarlo's classic cover, this 1987 Double Digest gem offers a rare moment of reflection in the Archie universe, all while staying true to its signature humor and heart.

Frustrated by both sexes' lack of understanding of what women's liberation really means, Valerie takes the boys aside and explains that women's lib isn't about taking over everything, it's about working side by side and helping each other. To illustrate this, Valerie asks them to imagine Alan M. being married to Josie, and refusing to let her work to help pay the bills. Eventually he'd work himself into an early grave.
