Steve Bissette
Stephen R. Bissette was born on March 14, 1955, in Vermont. He is best known for his horror-infused artwork and his influential run on DC Comics' *Swamp Thing* during the 1980s, where he collaborated with writer Alan Moore and inker John Totleben. That series redefined the character and the genre, showcasing Bissette's dense, organic linework and his ability to blend grotesque body horror with lush, atmospheric detail.
Bissette's path into comics began with independent and small-press work before his breakout on *Swamp Thing*. Beyond that flagship title, he co-created the anthology *Gore Shriek* and the satirical series *1963* with Moore and artist Rick Veitch. He also wrote and drew for his own *S.R. Bissette’s SpiderBaby Comix* and contributed to *Tales of Terror* and *Aliens: Havoc*. His career as an artist, writer, colorist, inker, and letterer spanned from 1979 to 2020, encompassing 39 cataloged issues.
Later in life, Bissette became a respected educator and historian, teaching comics studies and writing extensively on the medium. He received an Eisner Award for his work on *Swamp Thing* and remains a vital figure in horror comics, celebrated for his uncompromising vision and his mentorship of younger creators.
