Robert L. Washington III
Robert L. Washington III was born on November 29, 1964, and passed away on June 7, 2012. He is best remembered as a co-creator of the character Static and the superhero team the Shadow Cabinet for Milestone Media, the African American-owned imprint that launched in the 1990s. Static later gained wider fame through an animated television adaptation. Washington entered comics during Milestone’s formative years, bringing a grounded, character-driven sensibility to the publisher’s Dakotaverse. His writing credits span 33 issues between 1993 and 2023, with his most frequent work appearing in *Static*, *Shadow Cabinet*, and *Ninjak*. He also contributed to *Timewalker* and wrote for licensed properties such as *Saban Presents Power Rangers Turbo vs. BeetleBorgs Metallix* and *Saban Powerhouse*. Washington collaborated closely with Milestone founders Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, and Michael Davis, and his scripts often balanced superhero action with social commentary and youthful perspective. Though his career was cut short by his death at 47, his co-creation of Static remains a milestone in mainstream comics for its depiction of a Black teen hero. Washington’s work has been recognized in retrospectives on Milestone’s legacy, and Static’s enduring popularity has kept his contributions in the public eye.
