Richmond Lewis

Richmond Lewis is an American painter best known for her brief but influential stint as a colorist in comic books during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Born in the United States, she brought a fine-art sensibility to the medium, most notably on *Batman: Year One* (1987), where her muted, atmospheric palette—earthy browns, grays, and muted blues—helped define the noirish tone of Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s seminal story. Her coloring on that series, as well as on *Batman: Shaman* and other *Legends of the Dark Knight* issues, was a deliberate departure from the bright, primary-color norm of mainstream superhero comics.

Lewis entered comics largely through her marriage to artist David Mazzucchelli, who wanted to collaborate with her. She worked as a colorist on a handful of projects, including *Rubber Blanket* and the *Absolute Batman: Year One* edition, before returning to her primary career as a painter. Her contributions are often cited as a key element in the success of *Year One*, and she remains a respected figure among fans of that era. After a long hiatus, she returned to comics in 2024 for select projects. Her work has not received major industry awards, but her influence on coloring conventions in the late 1980s is widely acknowledged.
