Mark A. Nelson
Mark A. Nelson, born in 1953, is an artist whose meticulous, carefully articulated style has made him a steady presence in both comic books and role-playing games since the 1980s. He is best known for his work on the *Aliens* franchise, contributing to multiple series and omnibus collections that helped define the visual tone of the licensed comics. Nelson’s path into the industry was shaped by a long academic career; he taught for two decades at Northern Illinois University and later at Madison Area Technical College, while also working as a concept artist at Raven Software and as art director at Pi Studios. Beyond comics, he has illustrated numerous *Dungeons & Dragons* books and contributed to Eureka Productions’ *Graphic Classics* series. In 2019, he authored the instructional book *Fantasy World-Building: A Guide to Developing Mythic Worlds and Legendary Creatures*. He now runs Grazing Dinosaur Press with his wife. Over a career spanning from 1987 to 2024, Nelson has been credited on 39 issues, with his most prominent work appearing in *Aliens* and related collections. His legacy is that of a disciplined craftsman and educator who brought a thoughtful, grounded approach to fantasy and science-fiction illustration.
