Gordon Purcell, born on February 14, 1959, is an American comics artist whose career spans more than three decades of steady, prolific work across both licensed properties and original series. He is perhaps best recognized for his contributions to Star Trek comics, where his ability to capture convincing likenesses of the franchise's actors set him apart as a go-to artist for character-driven adaptations.
Star Trek #54 (1988)
Purcell built his reputation largely through licensed material, bringing the same careful attention to portraiture across titles including Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The X-Files, Xena: Warrior Princess, Lost in Space, Godzilla, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Barb Wire, and The Terminator. His work on these projects required not only strong draftsmanship but also the discipline to serve existing, beloved characters faithfully — a balance he maintained across well over a hundred issues in this arena.
Flash #23 (1989)
Beyond licensed work, catalog credits show him contributing to titles such as Silver Sable and the Wild Pack, Mad-Dog, and Protectors, Inc., demonstrating range outside the adaptation space. Active in the industry from at least 1987 through 2023, Purcell worked across roles as artist, inker, and writer over the course of approximately 185 credited issues. His enduring association with Star Trek in particular marks him as one of the more recognizable artists in the franchise's long comics history.
