Bill Benulis
Bill Benulis (November 5, 1928 – May 30, 2011) was an American comic book artist who made his mark during the 1950s, a fertile period for genre storytelling. He is best known for his work across war, horror, and science fiction comics, where his distinctive, signed style stood out. Benulis drew 146 stories in his career, frequently collaborating with inker Jack Abel, whose finishes complemented Benulis’s pencils. His art appeared in titles such as *Uncanny Tales*, *Planet Comics*, *Ghost Comics*, *Amazing Stories of Suspense*, *Astounding Stories*, and *Secrets of the Unknown*. Decades later, his work found new audiences through reprints: Marvel’s *War Is Hell* series, the IW imprint’s 1960s reissues of 1950s comics, and the *Marvel Masterworks: Atlas Era* collections, including volumes for *Strange Tales*, *Battlefield*, and *Journey into Mystery*. Though he never achieved the household-name status of some contemporaries, Benulis’s clean linework and knack for moody atmospherics have earned him a steady appreciation among collectors and historians of the Atlas era. He passed away in 2011 at age 82.
