Atlas Comics' Spellbound #23 (June 1954) delivers exactly the eerie goods its tagline promises — "Stories to Hold You Spellbound." Sol Brodsky's cover depicts a terrified man suspended by his wrists in chains, screaming as a massive winged demon creature looms behind him, while robed skeletal figures and scattered skulls crowd the shadowy foreground below. It's a genuinely unsettling tableau that sets the stage for the issue's featured tale, "The Day of the Vampire," brought to life inside by Bill Benulis.
