Who is Shift?

A living fragment of Metamorpho, Shift came into being when Rex Mason split into two separate beings. Lacking his progenitor's memories and struggling with his own identity, he joined the Outsiders while grappling with what it meant to exist as an incomplete reflection of another person.

Debuting in Outsiders #19 in 2005, Shift is a Modern Age DC creation from the pen of Judd Winick and the pencils of Carlos D'Anda β€” a character born into one of comics' most kinetic team books and carrying at least one collector-significant key issue to their name. Over a surprisingly durable publishing footprint stretching nearly two decades, Shift has kept remarkable company, sharing pages with luminaries like Firestorm, Green Lantern, Starfire, and Jennie-Lynn Hayden across titles as varied as Outsiders, Firestorm, and the critically lauded The Other History of the DC Universe. It's a lean but meaningful presence in the DC catalog β€” the kind of character whose 20 appearances reward the dedicated reader hunting for connective tissue in the modern DC universe.
