Diamondback
Willis Stryker was a Harlem gang lord and childhood friend of Luke Cage who betrayed him by framing him for a drug crime, sending Cage to prison — an act of treachery that inadvertently set Cage on the path to becoming a super hero. Operating as Diamondback, Stryker relied on lethal diamond-shaped throwing knives rather than any superhuman ability.
Few characters carry the weight of Marvel's Bronze Age street-level storytelling quite like Diamondback, who made their debut in the landmark Hero for Hire #1 in 1972 — one of the most culturally significant first issues of that era, brought to life by the formidable creative team of Archie Goodwin, George Tuska, and John Romita. Over more than five decades of Marvel history, this character has kept genuinely dangerous company, sharing pages with Spider-Man, Hammerhead, and Lonnie Lincoln, a rogues' gallery that signals Diamondback moves in some of the Marvel Universe's grittiest corners. Their appearances across Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Woman speak to a figure who has woven themselves into the broader tapestry of Marvel street-level storytelling rather than staying confined to a single corner of the universe. For collectors, that 1972 debut alone makes Diamondback a Bronze Age treasure worth tracking down.
