History

The series—and by extension this issue—grew out of Marvel's decision in mid-2023 to give Jessica Drew a new ongoing as part of the Gang War crossover event, with Steve Foxe and artist Carola Borelli announced as the creative team in August 2023. The volume launched in November 2023, making issue #4 (cover-dated February 2024, on-sale February 21, 2024) the fourth chapter of Foxe and Borelli's opening arc and the climax of the Gerry Drew subplot that had run since issue #1. Editor Ellie Pyle shepherded the series, with Leinil Francis Yu providing cover art and Arif Prianto on colors throughout the arc.

Gerry/Green Mamba claims he was not brainwashed but chose to join Hydra out of resentment toward Jessica; Hydra used technological and magical resources to suppress everyone's memories of his existence so no one could search for him.
Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) appears as a supporting character and physically prevents Jessica from pursuing Green Mamba after their confrontation, unaware Green Mamba is Gerry.
Other characters appearing include Diamondback (Willis Stryker), Madame Web (Julia Carpenter), Viper/Madame Hydra (Ophelia Sarkissian) in a cameo role, Madame Masque (Whitney Frost/Giulietta Nefaria), and Tilda Johnson and Miriam Drew in cameo roles.
The issue serves as a Gang War crossover tie-in; Viper engineered Diamondback's campaign to take over New York's criminal underworld as a vehicle to destroy Jessica personally.
