Spider-Woman #1 (vol. 8, cover-dated January 2024) marks the return of Jessica Drew to her own ongoing solo title after the Karla Pacheco/Pere Perez run concluded in early 2022, giving her a fresh creative team to carry her forward. The issue is the first appearance of Green Mamba, a new villain co-created by writer Steve Foxe and artist Carola Borelli whose identity — Jessica's own infant son Gerry, kidnapped and artificially aged by Hydra — delivers one of the sharpest emotional gut-punches in Drew's publishing history. By threading a deeply personal missing-child storyline through the framework of the 'Gang War' event, the series re-established Spider-Woman as a lead protagonist rather than a supporting player, a distinction the book had struggled to maintain across its publishing history. History

The series was announced at Marvel's Next Big Thing panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, with Foxe and Borelli revealed as the creative team alongside cover artist Leinil Francis Yu. What was originally solicited as a Gang War tie-in miniseries was upgraded to an ongoing before launch, a decision that gave Foxe room to build a longer arc around the Gerry Drew/Green Mamba storyline. Foxe noted that Jessica Drew had been his favorite Marvel heroine since childhood and that the Gang War framework became a springboard for a distinctly Spider-Woman saga with lasting ramifications for her closest relationships; a prelude in Amazing Spider-Man #31 (with art by Eric Koda) set up the missing-son mystery that issue #1 begins to investigate. The book was edited by Ellie Pyle with Nick Lowe as Executive Editor, under Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski.
