Brer Rabbit
Based on the classic American folktale trickster figure, Brer Rabbit is a clever, quick-witted rabbit who uses his wits to outsmart stronger adversaries. Western Publishing adapted the character for comics beginning with this 1949 Four Color issue.
Few characters carry the weight of folklore into the funny pages quite like Brer Rabbit, who bounded into comics with his 1949 Golden Age debut in Four Color #208, brought to life by artist Dick Moores under the Western Publishing banner. Rooted in storytelling traditions far older than comics themselves, this wily trickster found a natural home alongside the likes of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and his perennial adversary Brer Bear in the pages of beloved digest and Dell Giant collections. His appearances stretch a remarkable span from 1949 all the way to 2018, making him one of the more quietly enduring presences in the Disney comics universe. If you have a soft spot for Golden Age charm and the rich tradition of the clever underdog outwitting the odds, Brer Rabbit's comic adventures are absolutely worth seeking out.
