About the series
From 1999 to 2004, Image Comics spun off Sam and Twitch from the world of Spawn, focusing on the gritty homicide detectives Sam Burke and Twitch Williams as they navigated a dark, supernatural-tinged corner of New York. Written primarily by Brian Michael Bendis and Todd McFarlane, with art by Alex Maleev, Angel Medina, and Alberto Ponticelli, the series leaned into hard-boiled crime storytelling rather than superpowers. Over 26 issues, the duo—joined by forensic pathologist Dr. K.C. McRory and colleagues Tracy Cane, Barbara Rodriguez, and Jinx Alameda—unraveled cases that blurred the line between the mundane and the monstrous, establishing itself as a key early showcase for Bendis’s crime noir sensibilities.
