Y: The Last Man #2 is the second chapter of the debut 'Unmanned' arc of one of Vertigo's defining post-2000 series — a 60-issue run by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra that earned three Eisner Awards and became a touchstone for mature, socially engaged science fiction comics. This issue delivers the pivotal story beat of Yorick Brown finally reaching Washington, D.C. and reuniting with his mother, Congresswoman Jennifer Brown — the moment that sets the entire series' quest in motion and introduces the governing structure of the post-gendercide world. It also contains the first textual reference to the Daughters of the Amazon, the series' most visible antagonist faction, planting a narrative thread that won't fully blossom until issue #4. As the second installment of a series that would go on to spawn a 10-episode FX/Hulu television adaptation and multiple collected editions, this issue represents the very early architecture of a story that reshaped how mainstream audiences thought about post-apocalyptic genre fiction.

History

Brian K. Vaughan conceived the series' central premise in his early twenties, shortly after college, and pitched it to editor Heidi MacDonald and Vertigo executive editor Karen Berger when he was around 24 — pitching a detailed story bible to convince the imprint the concept would be thoughtful genre fiction rather than exploitation. After the development process at Vertigo, the series launched on Vaughan's 26th birthday (July 17, 2002) with issue #1; issue #2 followed on August 21, 2002. Interior art throughout the series was predominantly handled by Pia Guerra with inks by José Marzan Jr., while the cover for this issue was by J.G. Jones, who served as the primary cover artist for the first portion of the run before Massimo Carnevale took over later issues.
