John and his allies lead a battalion of flying war ships to free Dejah Thoris from Issus. Arras gives chase but most of his men are true subjects of Helium and defect to John Carter's side. John reaches Issus in her temple only to learn she has trapped Dejah, Phaidor and Thuvia in the Temple of the Sun from which they will not be able to escape for a full year. His men physically have to knock John out to get him to leave.
