About this Issue

Ultimate X-Men #24 closes out one of the most formally adventurous runs in recent Marvel history: a 24-issue, entirely Japan-set superhero horror series in which a single creator—Peach Momoko—wrote, penciled, inked, and colored every page. The finale shifts the series' point-of-view protagonist from Armor (Hisako Ichiki) to Maystorm (Mei Igarashi), an original character Momoko designed, and uses that shift to deliver an unresolved, grief-saturated coda that refuses conventional superhero closure. In doing so, the issue stands as a milestone for creator-driven storytelling within a Big Two shared universe, demonstrating that a manga-inflected, J-horror aesthetic could sustain a full ongoing run inside the Marvel ecosystem. It also marks the first appearances of the mutant figure Yoru and the in-universe drug Stardust, seeding threads that promotional material suggests will continue in later Ultimate Universe stories.

History

The series was conceived as part of Marvel's 2023–2024 Ultimate Universe relaunch, which grew out of Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch's Ultimate Invasion. Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and Hickman selected Momoko specifically because they wanted something wholly new rather than a re-skin of classic X-Men continuity. Momoko has cited Japanese manga body horror, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Serial Experiments Lain, Kamen Rider, and Devilman as key creative inspirations; her script was adapted into English by translator and scholar Zack Davisson, who had previously collaborated with her on the Demon Days saga. Maystorm, the character who takes center stage in issue #24, was originally designed by Momoko for the 'New Champions' variant cover of the 2021-series X-Men #27 and was subsequently developed into a full protagonist across the run.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published February 11, 2026 (cover-dated April 2026); the 24th and final issue of Ultimate X-Men Vol. 2 (2024–2026).
  • Entirely written, penciled, inked, and colored by Peach Momoko, with English script adaptation by Zack Davisson and lettering by Travis Lanham; edited by Wilson Moss.
  • First appearances of: the mutant figure Miss Y (Yoru), supporting characters Yukacha and Reiko, and the in-universe drug/object Stardust.
  • The issue's narrative centers on Maystorm (Mei Igarashi) coping with the apparent death/disappearance of Armor (Hisako Ichiki), who appears only in flashback—a deliberate perspective shift from the protagonist who anchored the entire preceding run.
  • The series ran for exactly 24 issues across roughly two real-time years, and was conceived as a real-time aging story; per Bleeding Cool, the young cast aged more visibly across its run than characters in any other concurrent Ultimate title.
  • Ultimate X-Men Vol. 2 was the third title launched in the revived Ultimate Universe line (alongside Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Black Panther), rooted in the alternate Earth-6160 setting established by Ultimate Invasion.
  • The series was inspired by multiple Japanese media touchstones confirmed by creator and series wiki: Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Serial Experiments Lain, Kamen Rider, and Devilman, as well as body-horror manga traditions.
  • The issue shipped with multiple variant covers, including a 1:100 Ejikure variant, a 1:50 Nicoletta Baldari variant, a 1:25 Daniele Di Nicuolo variant, a Marcos Martín 'Ultimate Finale' variant, a Peach Momoko connecting variant, and a Stacey Lee variant.
