History

The 2024 Ultimate X-Men series was conceived when Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and architect Jonathan Hickman selected Peach Momoko — an Eisner Award-winning cover artist celebrated for her Demon Days 'Momoko-verse' — to helm the X-Men title in the relaunched Ultimate Universe, explicitly because they wanted something radically different from anything the franchise had done before. Momoko writes and fully paints each issue in watercolor, with Zack Davisson (her longtime collaborator on Demon Days) adapting her Japanese-language scripts into English. The series drew creative inspiration from sources including Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Serial Experiments Lain, Kamen Rider, and Devilman, and Momoko has cited Japanese manga body horror — in the vein of Junji Ito — as a deliberate tonal ingredient woven throughout. The character Maystorm, who becomes a focal point of issue #11, originated as a design Momoko created for a variant cover of the 2021–2024 X-Men #27 as part of Marvel's 'New Champions' initiative before graduating into an ongoing starring role.
