Written by Michael Avon Oeming and illustrated by Scott Kolins, the story follows Thor and the Warriors Three on a quest to retrieve a mystical artifact, with the Avengers making a guest appearance. This volume captures the epic, mythological tone of Thor's adventures in the modern Marvel Universe.
In "Blood Oath [Part One]," Thor—both god and man—rises from a troubling dream to find Asgard in turmoil. Odin presides over the Althing as the giant Gnives accuses the Warriors Three of murder, claiming their slain sea beast was his son in disguise. With five impossible tasks demanded as penance, Thor steps forward to stand with his comrades, binding them in a blood oath to face the trial—no matter the cost.
In "Blood Oath [Part Two]," Thor and the Warriors Three—Hogun, Fandral, and Volstagg—embark on their first of five perilous quests, scaling the world tree to claim three enchanted apples guarded by the eagle Lerad. Their journey takes a sudden turn when they arrive at Olympus, only to find the pig of Dionysus—whose touch turns water to wine—already under the watchful eye of the mighty Hercules, who has come to visit.
In "Blood Oath [Part Three]," chaos reigns as Thor and a famously inebriated Hercules clash in a wild, no-holds-barred duel, their fight drawing bets from the very gods who set the stage. Meanwhile, the Warriors Three scramble to complete their latest trial—catching Dionysus’s elusive pig—amid the escalating madness of the divine arena.
In "Blood Oath [Part Four]," Thor and the Warriors Three—Hogun, Fandral, and Volstagg—face their most perilous trial yet as they journey to Ireland to claim the fabled Spear of Chulain, a weapon forged in fury and bound in boiling blood. With the aid of divine allies like Hercules, Dionysus, Hermes, Apollo, Artemis, and Poseidon, the Asgardians must confront not only the spear’s deadly power but also the legendary warrior Chulain himself, who arrives with vengeance in his eyes and a blade that cuts more than flesh.
In "Blood Oath [Part Five]," Thor and the Warriors Three—Hogun, Fandral, and Volstagg—press on through their trials, now facing a new challenge in Japan. After a brutal encounter with the Irish god Chulain, who decapitates Volstagg and attacks Thor, Hogun intervenes with an unexpected twist. Once restored by the world tree’s healing apple, the group journeys to the temple of the Grasscutter sword, only to find it sealed behind an army of the dead.
In "Blood Oath [Part Six]," Thor and the Warriors Three—Hogun, Fandral, and Volstagg—push through perilous trials to claim the ancient Grasscutter sword, only to find their journey far from over. As they race to complete the final task atop the hill of Toth in Egypt, serpent statues rise to block their path, and tensions flare when Gnives, resentful of their success, sends Ulik to stop them. With the arrival of Gnives’ wife and a tense standoff resolved through unexpected compromise, the Asgardians earn their hard-won victory. Back in New York, Thor returns to his life as Donald Blake, the weight of myth and duty still shaping his steps.
