“Two Dooms to Destroy Me!”
About this Issue

Thor #410 occupies a precise hinge point in the Thor mythology: it resolves the Eric Masterson-as-Thor arc's first major test — reclaiming Mjolnir from Doctor Doom's grip in Latveria — while simultaneously serving as the official prelude to the 'Acts of Vengeance' crossover, making it issue #1 of that 68-issue event on the Complete Marvel Reading Order. The final page, depicting a shadowy Loki approaching Doctor Doom to pitch his villain-swapping conspiracy, is the narrative spark that ignites one of Marvel's most ambitious late-Copper Age events. The issue also cleverly stages the Doom-versus-Doom dynamic (Victor Von Doom vs. his usurper Kristoff Vernard), using a villain-on-villain conflict to drive the plot rather than a conventional hero-versus-antagonist structure — an unusual storytelling choice that distinguished the DeFalco/Frenz run.

In "Two Dooms to Destroy Me!", Eric Masterson faces his greatest trial yet: reclaiming Mjolnir from the clutches of the mad monarch Doom, who now wields the mighty hammer. With Hercules and She-Hulk at his side, Eric must prove he’s worthy—before Doom’s twisted ambition brings ruin to Asgard and Earth. Written by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz, with art by Ron Frenz and inks by Joe Sinnott, this 1989 issue delivers high-stakes mythic action. The cover, penciled by Ron Frenz and inked by Joe Sinnott, captures the epic clash in bold, dynamic style.

History

The issue was written by Tom DeFalco (plot and script) with Ron Frenz contributing to the plot, with pencils by Ron Frenz and finishes by Joe Sinnott on the lead story; Herb Trimpe both penciled and inked the Volstagg back-up solo. Ralph Macchio edited the book, while Tom DeFalco served as Marvel Editor-in-Chief. The issue sits squarely within the DeFalco-Frenz creative partnership that defined the Thor title from the late 1980s into the early 1990s, a run that systematically built Eric Masterson from a supporting mortal character (introduced in Thor #391) into a full-fledged Thor surrogate. The title had been carrying the 'Mighty' adjective in its indicia since issue #407, a branding choice that persisted through issue #490.

Trivia · 9 facts

  • Cover date: November 1989; published August 1989 per Complete Marvel Reading Order production records.
  • Lead story titled 'Two Dooms to Destroy Me!' — written by Tom DeFalco (plot and script) and Ron Frenz (plot), penciled by Ron Frenz, inked by Joe Sinnott.
  • Back-up story 'Volstagg the Lion of Asgard' — written by Tom DeFalco, drawn and inked by Herb Trimpe; narrated entirely in rhyme and featuring Fandral, Hogun, Gudrun, and the Warriors Three.
  • The main story concludes a two-part arc in which Eric Masterson, operating as Thor, must travel to Latveria with Hercules and She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters) to recover Mjolnir from Doctor Doom, who had stolen it the previous issue.

  • The final page functions as the official one-page 'Acts of Vengeance' prelude: a shadowy figure (Loki in disguise) meets with Doctor Doom to propose the villain-swapping conspiracy that would drive the 1989–1990 Marvel crossover event spanning 68 issues.
  • Listed as issue #1 of 68 in the Acts of Vengeance story arc on Complete Marvel Reading Order, even though the Thor issues most closely associated with the full event are #411–412.
  • The issue has been collected in: Thor Epic Collection Vol. 17 – In Mortal Flesh (2017), Acts of Vengeance: Avengers (2019 trade paperback), and Thor: The Warriors Three Unleashed (2011) and its companion Complete Collection (2013) for the Volstagg back-up.
  • The indicia title reads 'The Mighty Thor Vol. 1', an adjective Marvel added starting with issue #407 and maintained through issue #490.
