Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published April 1967 (on-sale February 2, 1967); written by Stan Lee, penciled by Jack Kirby, inked by Vince Colletta; cover price 12 cents.
  • Lead story titled 'To Die Like a God!' (16 pages) concludes the four-part Troll–Asgard War arc; Thor frees the captive alien Orikal, whose departure from the universe renders all Troll weapons inert, forcing Geirrodur to surrender and withdraw.
  • First appearance of the Ulti-Force Cannon, a weapon created by Orikal that is powerful enough to drain Odin's Scepter of Power during the battle for Asgard.
  • The 'Tales of Asgard' backup (5 pages, 'The Secret of the Mystic Mountain!') is Part 3 of the Mogul of the Mystic Mountain arc — Thor and the Warriors Three discover that Zanadu, Mogul's city, is hidden inside an inverted crystal mountain beneath the earth rather than atop one, and they are confronted by the Jinni Devil at the issue's end.
  • Mogul of the Mystic Mountain — the arc's primary villain, a sorcerer-tyrant who destroyed Hogun the Grim's homeland — first appeared two issues earlier in Thor #137 (February 1967); his personal history as the conqueror of Hogun's people gives Hogun the Grim his defining narrative motivation and explains his famously grim demeanor.
  • This issue features the debut of a new 'The Mighty Thor' cover logo that remained in use on the title through issue #171.
  • The lead story was reprinted in Marvel Spectacular #10 (October 1974), though one page was omitted from that reprint; the complete issue has since been collected in Essential Thor Vol. 3, Marvel Masterworks: The Mighty Thor Vol. 5, The Mighty Thor Omnibus Vol. 2, Thor Epic Collection Vol. 3: The Wrath of Odin, and the King-Size Kirby Is Mighty! hardcover (2019).
  • The 'Tales of Asgard' backup feature, which ran from Journey Into Mystery #97 through Thor #145, was one of the last of its kind; by #146 it was replaced by an Inhumans featurette before the format was dropped entirely and the Thor lead story expanded to a full-length 20 pages.
