About this Issue

Uncanny X-Men #130 is the first comic book appearance of Dazzler (Alison Blaire), a character whose creation involved an elaborate multimedia deal between Marvel and Casablanca Records — making her debut here carry unusual corporate and cultural weight for a single issue. The issue also serves as the second chapter of the landmark Dark Phoenix Saga, the Claremont–Byrne storyline historians Roy Thomas and Peter Sanderson compared to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's 'Galactus Trilogy' as a defining achievement of its era. Within the story, Kitty Pryde takes her first independent heroic action by infiltrating Emma Frost's Chicago complex to rescue captured teammates, cementing her role as more than a supporting figure just one issue after her debut. Together with its predecessor issue #129, it introduced or advanced nearly every major player in the Hellfire Club arc — giving the X-Men franchise some of its most durable antagonists and one of its most beloved eventual members.

In "Dazzler," the X-Men face off against the Hellfire Club in a high-stakes race to recruit the first mutant of the disco era, with Scott and Jean leading the charge while Kitty aids in a daring escape from Emma Frost. Jean’s ongoing struggles with Mastermind’s mind games add a layer of tension as the team navigates both external threats and internal turmoil. Written by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, with art by Byrne and inks by Terry Austin, this 1980 issue captures the era’s flair and the X-Men’s relentless determination. The cover by John Romita Jr. and Terry Austin perfectly encapsulates the vibrant, electrifying energy of the story.

History

The issue was written by Chris Claremont and co-plotted by John Byrne using the traditional Marvel Method, with Byrne providing interior pencils inked by Terry Austin and a cover drawn by John Romita Jr. and Terry Austin. Dazzler's character had actually been developed earlier and separately from this issue: she was conceived as a cross-promotional multimedia venture between Casablanca Records and Marvel, with writer/editor Tom DeFalco scripting her origin story and artist John Romita Jr. — who initially modeled the character's look on singer Grace Jones — handling her design, while Roger Stern coined her name. Because Casablanca ran into financial difficulties and the standalone Dazzler special was shelved multiple times, Marvel folded her into the ongoing X-Men narrative under Claremont and Byrne as a high-profile guest appearance meant to build reader anticipation, making her first print appearance here rather than in her own book. The issue is officially titled 'Dazzler!' and carries the designation 'Part 2 of 9' of the Dark Phoenix Saga.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Dazzler (Alison Blaire), a mutant performer with the power to convert sound vibrations into light and energy beams, debuting as a disco singer performing at a Manhattan nightclub.
  • Second appearance of Kitty Pryde (Carmen and Terri Pryde also appear), who independently infiltrates Emma Frost's Chicago facility to rescue captive X-Men — her first heroic solo action.
  • Second appearance of Emma Frost (White Queen) and the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle, continuing from their introduction in issue #129; Sebastian Shaw and Jason Wyngarde (Mastermind) also appear.
  • Interior story written by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, with pencil art by John Byrne and inks by Terry Austin; the cover is by John Romita Jr. and Terry Austin.
  • Dazzler was originally conceived as a cross-promotional character between Casablanca Records and Marvel Comics; principally developed by writer Tom DeFalco and designer John Romita Jr., with Roger Stern providing the character's name.
  • The story is 'Part 2 of 9' of the Dark Phoenix Saga (issues #129–137), one of the most celebrated extended storylines in Marvel history; Jean Grey's 'timeslip' seduction by Jason Wyngarde (Mastermind) deepens this issue, foreshadowing her transformation into the Black Queen.
  • Dazzler declined to join the X-Men at the conclusion of this arc, going on to star in a self-titled solo series launched in 1981 that ran for forty-two issues.
  • A facsimile reprint edition of the issue, featuring a foil cover and reprinting the original story in full, was released by Marvel in 2024.
