As part one of the Dark Phoenix Saga, widely regarded as the definitive X-Men story arc, the issue set in motion Jean Grey's corruption and transformation that would culminate in her death in #137, a then-radical creative decision that raised the emotional stakes of superhero comics. Kitty Pryde, debuting here as a thirteen-year-old mutant caught between Xavier's school and the Hellfire Club's rival offer, became Marvel's most prominently Jewish superhero and one of the most enduring 'point-of-view' characters in the franchise. Emma Frost, introduced as the cold and manipulative White Queen, evolved over the following decades from arch-villain to X-Men headmistress, making her first appearance here the starting point of one of Marvel's richest character redemption arcs.

The issue was co-plotted by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, with Claremont scripting and Byrne penciling, inked by Terry Austin, colored by Bob Sharen, lettered by Tom Orzechowski, and edited by Roger Stern under editor-in-chief Jim Shooter. Byrne has stated he conceived Kitty Pryde — her visual design, phasing power, and the name itself, which he borrowed from a classmate he met at art school in Calgary — while Claremont shaped her personality and, controversially to Byrne, made her a prodigy-level genius; Claremont further drew elements of her personality from Louise Simonson's daughter Julie. The Hellfire Club was built around a 1966 episode of the British television series The Avengers ('A Touch of Brimstone'), with Emma Frost's name taken from that episode's character Emma Peel and Mastermind's new alias 'Jason Wyngarde' lifted from the actor who played the episode's villain, Peter Wyngarde; Claremont and Byrne similarly modeled Sebastian Shaw's appearance on actor Robert Shaw.

Professor X identifies a new mutant, and the X-Men go to recruit her. The Hellfire Club also tries to woo the young Kitty Pryde into their ranks.
