From a worm's-eye view amid a sea of rotting, grasping hands, a bloodied and desperate survivor fires a shotgun point-blank into the zombie horde surrounding him — the muzzle flash blazing against the grey, grim sky. Charlie Adlard's cover composition puts readers right in the thick of the undead mass, making the tension feel immediate and suffocating. Robert Kirkman, Adlard, and Cliff Rathburn were delivering some of their most visceral work in 2009, and this issue looks to be no exception.
