By June 2005, The Walking Dead was operating with a creative split that had been in place since issue #7: writer Robert Kirkman handled the scripts while Charlie Adlard had taken over interior art duties from co-creator Tony Moore, who remained on cover art through issue #24. Kirkman has stated publicly that the concept of a lone survivor with two armless, jawless zombie escorts was an idea he had been developing for some time, but had not initially planned to expand into a major character — Michonne's depth and longevity grew organically once she was on the page. The issue was published in black and white, consistent with the series' aesthetic throughout its original run, with Cliff Rathburn providing gray-tone shading over Adlard's linework. The Walking Dead Wiki notes that the issue's script was originally intended to focus more heavily on Rick's domestic crisis with Lori, with Michonne's introduction playing a slightly smaller role — the final balance between those two threads shifted during production.
