Robert Kirkman brought Charlie Adlard aboard as interior artist beginning with this issue because original artist Tony Moore was struggling to meet the monthly deadline schedule; Kirkman has stated he approached Adlard as his dream replacement, initially doubtful Adlard would accept, and was surprised when he agreed. Moore, whose detailed, heavily rendered style had set the visual tone of the first six issues, transitioned to cover duties only, continuing to supply covers through issue #24 before ultimately parting ways with Kirkman — a separation that later produced a 2012 lawsuit, settled out of court, in which Moore alleged he had been persuaded to sign away his rights to comic and television profits. Kirkman also revealed in a later 'Letter Hacks' column (issue #108) that the survivors had originally been scripted to find the prison in this very issue, suggesting the story's most iconic setting was pushed back for pacing reasons, an early example of the editorial flexibility that kept the series perpetually surprising.
