First full in-continuity appearance of Gambit (Remy LeBeau), the Cajun mutant thief created by writer Chris Claremont and artist/co-creator Jim Lee.
Interior art by Mike Collins with inks by Joe Rubinstein; cover art by Andy Kubert. Published August 1990 (release date June 19, 1990; cover date Late August 1990).
The story is the second chapter of a three-part arc titled 'Gambit,' in which a de-aged and amnesiac Storm is living as a street thief in Cairo, Illinois, when she crosses paths with Gambit during a heist at a mansion controlled by the Shadow King.
X-Men Annual #14 (by Claremont and Art Adams) was published three weeks before this issue by mistake, even though its story is set chronologically after #266; this error has fueled an ongoing collector debate about which issue constitutes Gambit's 'true' first appearance.
Gambit's powers are displayed in nascent form: he charges objects with energy causing them to explode, and demonstrates a possible low-level mental charm ability — though his signature playing cards do not yet appear; he uses throwing spikes in this issue.
A parallel subplot shows Val Cooper — possessed by the Shadow King — arriving to assassinate Mystique in Washington, D.C., while Mystique reveals she was already warned of the attempt through a letter left by the recently deceased Destiny (Irene Adler, shown via photograph).
Nanny and the Orphan-Maker appear as secondary antagonists pursuing Storm, adding a second threat vector to the issue and tying into the ongoing 'de-aged Storm' story arc.
Marvel has released multiple facsimile editions reprinting the original issue in its exact form, including printings in 2019 and a new printing in August 2023, as well as collecting it in trade paperbacks including X-Men: Gambit Classic Vol. 1 (2009) and X-Men Origins: Gambit (2016).
