Written by Steve Seagle and illustrated by Chris Bachalo with a five-person inking team, the issue was edited by Mark Powers under editor-in-chief Bob Harras. Its production coincided with significant behind-the-scenes turbulence: according to Seagle's writing partner on the companion title, Joe Kelly, the editorial direction of this very story arc — 'The Hunt for Xavier' — ultimately became what Kelly described as 'the last straw' that drove both Seagle and Kelly to leave Marvel. The enhanced Direct Edition carried a prismatic gatefold cover (art by Carlos Pacheco), while a separate Dynamic Forces variant with a Jae Lee cover was produced; the issue also includes a Steve Rude pin-up and bonus material reprinting the cover to the original X-Men #1, framing the anniversary with deliberate historical self-awareness.
