About this Issue

The Spectacular Spider-Men #13 is a pivotal chapter in Greg Weisman's 'Strange Love' arc — the second ongoing storyline of the first-ever ongoing series to co-star Peter Parker and Miles Morales as equal leads. The issue consolidates one of the more novel character dynamics in recent Spider-Man publishing: Elementary (Juliet Marcos), a new heroine with alchemical elemental powers, is placed at the dramatic center of a triple-threat conflict involving two simultaneous Electros and a split, mindless Lizard — a creature that has been narratively separated from Curt Connors since Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 6) #70. It also deepens the emotional stakes around supporting cast members Anna Romney and Rickie Lund, bringing a queer relationship into the heart of a major Spider-Man title's ongoing storyline without making it incidental to the plot.

History

The series was launched in March 2024 by writer Greg Weisman — creator of the beloved 2008–2009 Spectacular Spider-Man animated series — alongside artist Humberto Ramos, marking Weisman's return to Spider-Man comics. Issue #13 falls within the book's second arc, 'Strange Love' (chapters collected in Vol. 3 of the same name), where penciling duties had shifted from Ramos to Italian artist Emilio Laiso, whose prior Marvel credits include Star Wars: Doctor Aphra and Marvel's Spider-Man: Velocity. The 'Strange Love' arc was edited by Nick Lowe with Tom Groneman as associate editor, under editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Story title: 'Strange Love Chapter #6: Life and Limb' — the sixth chapter of the series' second arc; released March 5, 2025 (cover date: May 2025).
  • Written by Greg Weisman; art by Emilio Laiso; colors by Edgar Delgado; letters by Joe Caramagna.
  • Elementary (Juliet Marcos) — introduced as a civilian in Spectacular Spider-Men #1 (March 2024) and debuting as a costumed hero in issue #10 — appears here as a full featured protagonist alongside both Spider-Men, firmly establishing her as the unofficial lead of the 'Strange Love' arc.
  • The Lizard in this issue is the Isotope Genome Accelerator Duplicate — a separate, mindless entity physically split from Dr. Curt Connors during the events of Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 6) — making it a distinct and more dangerous villain rather than Connors himself.
  • Both Electros appear as antagonists: Max Dillon (the original) and Francine Frye (whose presence in Weisman's run underscores how much the Spider-Man mythology has evolved since the writer's animated series, which predated her creation).
  • Billy Connors — Curt Connors's son, and a clone — was kidnapped two issues earlier (Spectacular Spider-Men #11) by the two Electros; his life is the dramatic hinge of this chapter, with the Lizard leveraged by the Spider-Men to pressure the Electros into revealing his location.
  • Max Vinck, previously identified only as a 'barista' at the series' central Coffee Bean hangout in issue #9, is revealed in this issue to actually be the Coffee Bean's manager — a minor but characteristic piece of Weisman's densely layered continuity.
  • The story was later collected in The Spectacular Spider-Men Vol. 3: Strange Love trade paperback (September 2025), collecting issues #11–15.
