History

The series was relaunched directly from Thor (Vol. 3) #621, with Matt Fraction continuing the run he had begun on that volume, now paired with superstar artist Olivier Coipel — a creative team Marvel positioned as the flagship Asgardian voice during the Fear Itself event year. The title change from 'Thor' to 'The Mighty Thor' echoed the classic indicia used in earlier decades of the original volume and gave the relaunch a fresh #1 for the trade-paperback and direct-market audiences energized by the theatrical release. The issue also included an eight-page behind-the-scenes preview of the 2011 Thor film's production art, an intentional editorial tie designed to capitalize on the concurrent MCU rollout. The series ran 22 issues plus an annual before concluding and passing the torch to Jason Aaron's Thor: God of Thunder in 2012.
