The Incredible Hulk #418
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThe Incredible Hulk #418 is a creative high-water mark of Peter David's celebrated run on the title, cramming a landmark character debut, an inter-publisher stealth crossover, and a pivotal supporting-cast milestone into a single oversized wedding issue. The first appearance of Talos the Untamed — a Skrull born without the ability to shapeshift, a genuinely novel wrinkle in Marvel's alien-race mythology — gave the Skrull corner of the Marvel Universe its most psychologically textured figure in years. Equally significant is the unmistakable cameo of Death of the Endless, Neil Gaiman's beloved DC/Vertigo character, making this one of the very few Marvel comics of its era to feature a DC Vertigo character in-story — without a formal crossover agreement — which has made its canonical status a lively debate ever since. On the character front, the marriage of Rick Jones and Marlo Chandler marked the most consequential development in Rick Jones's story since his transformation into Captain Marvel's partner, anchoring the human emotional core of David's Hulk narrative.
In "We Are Gathered Here," Rick Jones, the Hulk's longtime companion, stands at the altar to marry Marlo Chandler, but their wedding ceremony is thrown into chaos by a sudden, sinister visitor—Mephisto himself, with intentions far darker than a simple guest appearance. Peter David crafts a tense, emotionally charged moment as Gary Frank's dynamic artwork captures the escalating stakes, with Cam Smith's inks and Glynis Oliver's colors heightening the dramatic tension.

Writer Peter David conceived Talos specifically for the Rick Jones/Marlo Chandler wedding arc spanning issues #417–418, wanting a Hulk fight that subverted the usual formula; his solution — a Skrull with a genetic inability to shapeshift, driven by the need to die honorably in battle — was described in detail on David's own blog in 2018. The art was handled by Gary Frank, who was David's primary artistic collaborator during this stretch of the run, with inks by Cam Smith, colors by Glynis Oliver, and letters by Joe Rosen; editor James Felder oversaw the issue. The Death of the Endless cameo was never formally sanctioned as a Marvel/DC co-production but was crafted with enough plausible deniability — the character is never named in the issue — that it slipped through, making it a quiet act of cross-publisher audacity on David's part.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First appearance of Talos the Untamed (Skrull), created by writer Peter David and artist Gary Frank — the character later appeared in the 2019 MCU film Captain Marvel (played by Ben Mendelsohn) and the Disney+ series Secret Invasion.
- Talos is depicted as a rare Skrull born without the ability to shapeshift — a genetic defect that drives his entire backstory and distinguishes him from virtually every other member of his species in Marvel canon.
- Issue contains a cameo by Death of the Endless, Neil Gaiman's DC/Vertigo Sandman character — she is never named but is visually unmistakable, attending the wedding because both Rick and Marlo had previously been resurrected from death.
- Marriage of Rick Jones and Marlo Chandler — the central narrative event of the issue and one of the most significant relationship milestones in the Hulk supporting cast.
- Written by Peter David with pencils by Gary Frank, inks by Cam Smith, colors by Glynis Oliver, letters by Joe Rosen, and edited by James Felder; published June 1994.
- Notable guest appearances include Mephisto (who schemes to claim Marlo's soul), Silver Surfer, Captain America, Doc Samson, the Impossible Man, and a human-form cameo by Rom — the Impossible Man having sent invitations to a chaotic cross-section of the Marvel Universe as a prank.
- Published with multiple cover variants, including a gatefold die-cut embossed collector's edition cover alongside the standard direct edition.
- Later collected in the trade paperback The Incredible Hulk Epic Collection: Future Imperfect.
