About this Issue

The Fury of Firestorm #28 holds a durable place in DC history as the debut of Slipknot (Christopher Weiss), a rope-based villain who would graduate from Firestorm antagonist to full Suicide Squad membership and eventually reach live-action in the 2016 film. Beyond the first appearance, the issue also contains a quietly significant pre-Crisis Easter egg: a non-advertised seven-panel cameo sequence featuring the Monitor and his assistant Lyla (Harbinger), one of many such seeds DC seeded across its line in 1984 ahead of Crisis on Infinite Earths. That dual status — villain debut plus early Crisis infrastructure — makes it a useful snapshot of DC's editorial planning in the months before its universe-reshaping crossover.

History

By issue #28, The Fury of Firestorm was operating under a split creative arrangement: series architect Gerry Conway supplied the plot while Joey Cavalieri handled the actual scripting, a division of labor that becomes visible in the issue's Grand Comics Database credit and on the Stop Button review site. Rafael Kayanan, who had taken over the pencilling duties from Pat Broderick earlier in the run, drew the issue, with Pablo Marcos and Rodin Rodriguez sharing inking chores. Gerry Conway also served as editor, with Janice Race as assistant editor — an arrangement common in DC's mid-1980s editorial structure.

Features a non-advertised pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths cameo sequence (seven panels) with the Monitor and Lyla/Harbinger — part of DC's line-wide seeding of Crisis tie-ins across its titles in 1984.
Plot driver: the 2000 Committee contracts with the Monitor to deploy Slipknot to capture Firehawk (Lorraine Reilly); Slipknot is defeated and taken into police custody at the story's end.
The issue was reprinted in the French anthology DC Flash (Arédit-Artima, 1985 series) #13 (May 1987).
Three print variants exist: Direct Edition, Newsstand Edition, and Canadian Edition.
Slipknot subsequently joined the Suicide Squad and was portrayed by actor Adam Beach in the 2016 DC Extended Universe film Suicide Squad.
