“Webbed Hands, Warm Heart!”

The Headmen have the Defenders right where they want them — the cover of this March 1976 issue shows the Hulk, Doctor Strange, and Valkyrie laid out unconscious while a hulking blue-furred villain looms over them, boasting that their "mind-machine" treatment will leave the team forever changed. A nervous accomplice and a sinister-looking Nagan look on as the cover's bold tagline, "Havoc is the Headmen!", makes clear who's running the show. Gil Kane's pencils, inked by Frank Giacoia and Mike Esposito, give the whole scene a wonderfully ominous energy that makes it hard to put down.
