“Sanctuary!”

This June 1983 issue of The Defenders presents a genuinely unsettling cover by Don Perlin and Jack Abel: a caped, bald figure looms behind a powerfully built hero bearing a pentagram emblem on his chest, pressing a golden trident against him while a crowd of hooded figures watches from the shadows — stained-glass windows casting eerie color behind them. The upper corner inset teases additional Defenders faces, hinting at a broader team caught up in whatever dark ritual is unfolding. Titled "Sanctuary!", this chapter written by J. M. DeMatteis promises that even places of supposed refuge can hold serious menace.
