History

Bob Harras took over writing duties on The Avengers beginning with issue #334 in 1991, with Steve Epting joining shortly after as full-time penciller from issue #341 onward, and Tom Palmer serving as inker and colorist throughout. Marvel published #363 as one of four double-sized anniversary specials celebrating the Avengers' 30th year, which accounts for its expanded page count and embossed silver foil cover. The issue was edited by Ralph Macchio under editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco, and the letters page in the issue itself previewed George Pérez's 30th anniversary Avengers poster — underscoring the milestone context in which the story was produced. Harras's stated editorial ambition for his run was to tell 'a different story' with the Avengers, leaning into soap-operatic character dynamics and a long-form villain arc at a time when the title had drifted through several short-tenured writers after Roger Stern's departure.
