History

Stan Lee scripted the issue under the Marvel Method during the final stretch of his long partnership with John Romita Sr., who handled both interior pencils and the cover; Sal Buscema provided inks and Artie Simek the lettering. The origin recap embedded in the story draws on the sequence first told in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962), with a funeral scene sourced from Spectacular Spider-Man Magazine #1, reflecting Marvel's established practice of weaving accessible backstory into ongoing issues to retain new readers at the newsstand. By March 1971, Lee was beginning to step back from full scripting duties on the title, making this issue part of his closing chapter as the series' primary writer.
