Story title: 'The Sable Gauntlet!' — Spider-Man intervenes to protect Silver Sable from a neo-Nazi antagonist (Frank Cruz / Franz Kraus) who has lured her into a compromised security-test job.
This is NOT Silver Sable's first appearance; she debuted in Amazing Spider-Man #265 (1985). Issue #301 is a significant early spotlight issue that fleshed out her Symkarian background and professional motivations ahead of her eventual solo series.
The cover is a deliberate compositional homage to Amazing Spider-Man #300, placing Spider-Man in the same pose but in his restored red-and-blue costume rather than the black symbiote suit, serving as a visual bookend to the Venom arc.
First appearance of villain Frank Cruz (Franz Kraus) and minor character Martin Jacobi.
The issue has been reprinted in: the Spider-Man Classics Action Figure reprint (Toy Biz, October 2000, packaged with Series 1 action figure); Spider-Man Visionaries (Marvel, 2001); the Amazing Spider-Man by David Michelinie & Todd McFarlane Omnibus (Marvel, 2011); and the Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection #18 – Venom (2018), among other international editions.
A full-page house ad inside the issue promoted the first appearance of Typhoid Mary in Daredevil, illustrated by John Romita Jr. — a notable snapshot of the broader Marvel publishing moment.
McFarlane's Spider-Man visual innovations during this run — including his distinctive 'spaghetti' webbing and dynamic figure anatomy — became hallmarks of late-1980s/early-1990s comics art style.
